MARIQUITA RACING IN THE SOLENT 2015

Mariquita is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and iconic yachts in the history of the sport. Having won the 2014 Panerai Trophy in the Mediterranean, Mariquita returns to Cowes to participate in one of the busiest summers ever on the Solent including the Bicentennial celebrations for the Royal Yacht Squadron. Can Mariquita continue her winning streak with a brand new crew in the challenging Solent conditions? How will she reconcile her will to win with some of the windiest conditions for 25 years? Against the backdrop of Ben Ainslie's America's Cup campaign the documentary film follows Mariquita over a four month period as she competes in an array of regattas including the RYS Fleet Review, The Westward Cup and Panerai British Classic Week.

In depth interviews with helmsman John Caulcutt and top yachtsman George Newman and Shirley Robertson give a fascinating insight into the 2015 race campaign as Mariquita takes on rivals Eleonora and Sumrun on the same waters where she started racing in 1911. After an illustrious career spanning over a century there is no doubt the 2015 season will be remembered as one of Mariquita's most exciting and eventful.

REVIEWS

“Especially evocative is the human emotion that runs all the way through the documentary. The highs and lows. The deep pride of ownership.”  Marina Johnson, Clearline Communications

“If I understand correctly the owners of Mariquita commissioned you to make the film. Hats off to them for their vision and sense of history.” Alex Martin, Novelist

MARIQUITA RACING IN 2014

Yacht Mariquita had not won the Big Boat Class in the Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge since 2007. After a promising debut season with a new crew, the owners of Mariquita felt that the 2014 season represented their best opportunity to challenge for the coveted Panerai Trophy. Filmed between May – October 2014 in France, Spain, and Italy this documentary film combines contemporary race footage and interviews with archive material to tell the story of how the season unfolded. With five regattas in Antibes, Argentario, Mahon, Imperia, Cannes the racing was often long and hard as Mariquita battled it out with her great rivals Moonbeam IV, Moonbeam III and Halloween.

Interviews with helmsman and owner John Caulcutt are combined with insights from an array of top sailors including George Newman, Chris Barkham, David Bedford, Mikael Créac'h and Harold Cudmore to give a compelling insight into Big Boat classic racing. The film tells the inside story of Mariquita's unforgettable 2014 season: the highs and lows, the wins and losses, the teamwork and tactics, but above all the tension and drama of a great rivalry played out on the high seas.

REVIEWS

"In the year that held some of my favourite races, this film followed the action right alongside as we took a shot at the Panerai trophy. While it's hard not to get a great shot of Mariquita, Ben knows all the secrets after years with the boat and he captures the idiosyncrasies that the other cameras blindly miss.  As a member of the crew, it's brilliant to have this record to keep with me for years to come. "
– Matthew Oates, crew member on board Mariquita
